Rumeli Han (Cité Roumélie, Agoras Rumilias) is located in Istiklal Street, which is the most famous avenue of Istanbul, visited by 3 million people over weekends. Istiklal Avenue is an elegant pedestrian street of the historic Beyoglu (Pera) district, which is approximately three kilometers long. The avenue houses exquisite boutiques, music stores, bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theaters, libraries, cafes, pubs, nigh clubs with live music, historical patisseries, chocolateries and restaurants. Rumeli Han is located at the centre of the most popular upscale retail area of Istiklal Avenue.
The avenue is surrounded by late Ottoman era buildings of 19th–20th centuries, which were designed with the Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic, Beaux-Arts and Art Nouveau architecture styles. Ragip Pasha (Sultan Abdulhamit’s chamberlain) commisioned Rumeli Han as his mansion from the most talented Italian and French architects of the era. Since 1897, Rumeli Han witnessed lives of several aristocrats and artists over centuries.
In 2012, Gevrekli Tourism Ltd. bought the majority of the shares of Rumeli Han to convert it into one of the most luxurious and life-style hotels in Istanbul. The company is owned by Huseyin Yuksel, a lawyer who continuously invested in Tourism and Real-Estate sectors since 40-years. Gevrekli Tourism recently agreed with one of the most reputable hotel chains of the world for branding the Rumeli Han hotel project. The restoration of Rumeli Han is expected to be finalized by May-2015.
Gevrekli Tourism is affiliated with Yuksel Group, which also includes two other companies: Yuksel Tourism Construction and Reisler Leather Industry. Yuksel Group already owns and manages a collection of boutique, midscale and upscale hotels consisting of almost a thousand of rooms in the city-centre of Istanbul. Most well-known hotels of the group are Taxim Hill Hotel, Bade Hotel Sisli - Summit Hotels & Resorts (a member of Preferred Hotel Group) and Wyndham Istanbul Kalamis Marina.
Gevrekli Tourism, together with other members of Yuksel Group, is conscious of its social and environment responsibilities and strongly appreciate the historical and social value of Rumeli Han. Through the restoration process, the beauty of this important monument will be revitalized, resulting in a much closer function to its initial residential usage. Whilst, interiors will be designed to act as a live-museum that also preserves the memories of previous inhabitants of the building since 1897. Rumeli Han will also respect the environment as a "green building" matching all of the LEED and BREEAM standards that the restoration procedure permits.
