Barbra Curtiss, Owner/Broker

Barbra Curtiss has been in the real estate industry for twenty six years. She has also owned and operated several small businesses over her 4 decade career span. Barbra retired in 2002 from Post Properties as a senior property manager after a 22 year career in multifamily property management to open her boutique real estate company where she is the Owner-Broker of Barbra Curtiss Realty, Inc located in Cumming, Georgia. Barbra is also Founder and CEO of NSFRA, National Society of Female REO Agents and also very proud to be the National REO Brokers Association, NRBA, Master Broker for Georgia, a member of the NRBA’s Women’s Advisory Council and honored May 2011 with the NRBA’s Humanitarian award for her outstanding compassion and support to fellow members. Barbra is also the Executive Director of NAFE Georgia which is a networking chapter of The National Association for Female Executives where Barbra oversees all networking NAFE Chapters throughout Georgia.

Barbra’s career in the real estate related industry started in 1980 when she accepted a position with Lane Company as a leasing agent, at the age of 29, for a 200 unit all adult luxury apartment complex in Birmingham, Alabama, within 30 days Barbra was promoted to the property manager’s position and within a year promoted into the training department where Barbra traveled the Southeast and Southwest regions for Lane company teaching and training all new employees on company operations as well as sales and marketing, thus a 22 year full time career in property management and training evolved. Barbra said “I never thought about being a real estate agent but back in the early 80’s legislation was politicking very hard to change the laws requiring all property managers to be licensed agents”. Being proactive Barbra seized the opportunity to become a licensed realtor in 1986 and then a licensed Broker in 1989. After 22 years in the corporate world of property management Barbra took the leap to become self-employed in order to utilize her real estate license to its fullest by forming Barbra Curtiss Realty, Inc. Barbra’s Real estate career took an immediate direction still towards the property management sector by working with many Investor buyer clients needing a full service realtor offering management as well as sales. Barbra's direction towards the Default Servicing Industry evolved when Barbra became a listing broker for the VA in 2002. REO was not looked upon favorably by other agents back then as it is today. Barbra met many negative obstacles where other agents thought it was not cool to “make a living upon the hardship of others” and ironically many of those agents are now REO Experts! Barbra was always amazed when banks and asset management companies would call asking for help and when Barbra would ask how the caller heard about her their reply was “you are the only one that called us back.” Due to the continued high level of service Barbra has provided to her clients and real estate peers, Barbra is one of the most respected REO brokers in the nation today and always willing and honored to help anyone in the real estate industry nationwide”.

Recognizing the need, Barbra set her mind to meet one of the challenges that always appeared to be popping up where more and more female agents were calling for advice and help in growing their real estate career, based on this need NSFRA was born! “There will always be challenges in life no matter who you are or what you are doing. The important thing is to meet challenges head-on, solve the problems involved and move forward.” National Society of Female REO Agents, NSFRA, is a free organization dedicated to mentoring and training female real estate agents desiring to learn all aspects of the real estate industry including, Default Servicing which includes REO & BPO, Property Management, Sales & Marketing and HOA Management. The main obstacle was the lack of an affordable organization where women could come together to share their knowledge and experience. The challenge was to create a vehicle that was easily accessible to any and all female reals estate agents wishing to use it; provide the opportunity for open communication among its members and most importantly, to be affordable for female agents and brokers everywhere. Barbra created the National Society of Female Real Estate Agents as the solution. The mission of NSFRA is focused on being an accessible, affordable organization for female real estate agents wanting to improve their skills and career success in all aspects of Real Estate.

Barbra grew up in Huntsville Alabama which back in the 1950's was a small farming town. She says “Being one of four daughters born to a farmer, we grew up working as if we were sons. I loved working in the fields with my Dad! The smell of the outdoors, especially in the spring when the rich ground was broke for spring planting. The sweet smell of wild honeysuckle in the summer air and the smell of fresh cotton in the fall as it was picked and headed for the huge cotton gins will always be some of my most cherished memories. Farm life was not easy but it taught me never to be afraid of hard work and it set deep rooted values that have been priceless through my career".

Mother, grandmother, wife, avid outdoorsman and accomplished business woman Barbra is as much at home in the conference room as she is out on Lake Lanier fishing with her husband. Throughout her career she has always pursued excellence through a commitment to high standards, fair play and sound judgment. She has managed to achieve a rare balance between her personal and professional responsibilities. Barbra is an informed, well-rounded, down-to-earth person and realtor with a sincere commitment to helping others.
