El camino salkantay trail is an off the beaten path trek to Machu Picchu. Huchuy Qosqo Hike is incredibly beautiful. It takes you through pristine highland villages and canyons. You will also be hiking on the Original Inca Trail – Qhapaq Ñan.
Huchuy Qosqo Ruins nestle at 3650 metres (11980ft) above sea level. The hike is quite an easier and shorter hike when compared with Inca Trail or Salkantay Trek.
The whole trek is just 17 kilometres (4.34 miles) long. Also, there aren’t many high mountain passes. The highest point of the trek is at 4350 metres (14271 ft).
Huhcuy Qosqo in Quechua means little Cusco. It was a prominent site during the Inca civilization. This Inca site was built by the Inca Emperor Viracocha.
It served as a military and administrative centre. One of the unmissable sites here is the 40 metres long kallanka (great hall).
During the last days of Virachocha’s rule, he faced a revolt from the Chancha community. Fearing for his life, he handed over the throne to his son Pachacutec and took refuge in Huchuy Qosqo. Pchacutec in turn deposed the revolt and assumed the role of the ninth Inca Sapa.
Viracocha had a natural death. His mummified corpse was stored in Huchuy Qosqo. When the Spanish conquistadors under the leadership of Gonzalo Pizzaro looted Huchuy Qosqo in 1534, they burned the corpse of the former Inca emperor Viracocha.
